Tata began revising its entire line-up with the Tiago hatchback, and it hasn’t looked back since. Every model has brought with it an upmarket feel, striking design and promising build quality. For 2020, Tata has decided to take the fight to the premium hatchback segment where its Japanese and Korean rivals are currently in the lead. With the Altroz, Tata has not only managed to keep the design similar to the 45X concept car but have also packaged the product with good levels of fit and finish, a stunning exterior design, loads of features and a fully-equipped, spacious cabin. The Altroz also promises good driving dynamics and a Global NCAP crash test rating of five stars. Even the Tata Altroz price is very competitive.
Tata Altroz Exterior
From the outside, Tata has got the styling spot-on for the Altroz. It can’t be mistaken for anything but a hatchback, but the number of creases and curved mouldings are aplenty. At the front, it boasts of a sharp-looking grille, finished in gloss black, flanked by swept-back, edgy headlamps. There’s also a band of chrome that runs below the grille and the headlights. The bumper sports an air-dam and a pair of high-set fog lamps. That up-swept window line looks particularly attractive with a gloss-black panel that runs alongside, tapering off towards the rear. Stylish 16-inch, laser-cut alloy wheels fill up the wheel arches on the Tata Altroz new model, and we really liked the look of a three-door hatch, with those rear door handles placed in the C-pillar. At the rear, the smoked-out look for the tailgate and the taillights are, by far, the sportiest on any hatchback.
Tata Altroz Variants
The Tata Altroz variants are as follows: XE, XM, XT, XZ and XZ(O). Features include cruise control, navigation, Harman sound system, climate control, rain-sensing wipers, multi-drive modes, rear AC vents with rear power outlet, push-button start-stop, LED DRLs, a 7.0-inch digital MID screen, 16-inch laser-cut alloy wheels, a 17.78cm TFT digital instrument cluster, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic headlamps, cooled glove box, leather-wrapped steering, projector headlamps, wearable key, ambient lighting, voice recognition, customizable infotainment theme and follow-me-home headlamps. In terms of safety, it gets a reverse camera, dual front airbags, ABS and EBD, Isofix child seats, CSC and voice alerts.
Tata Altroz Interior
Getting into the cabin is easy, thanks to the doors that open to 90 degrees. On the dashboard, you’ll notice a free-standing 7.0-inch touchscreen mounted on the dashboard, and the silver layered plastic on the dashboard looks rather nice. Quality of materials is of a good standard, and the light blue lighting for the dashboard looks cool at night. Up-front, the seats are large, the flat-bottomed steering looks sporty and the central armrest that slides is rather useful. Visibility out-front is pretty good, and the instrument cluster is a combination of an analogue speedometer and digital tachometer. There are lots of cubby holes around too, with cup-holders on the glove box lid as well. The rear bench is set nice and high, and there is ample legroom and shoulder room. For rear occupants, you will also find a fold-down rear armrest. The seats are well-bolstered too. Boot space, at 345 litres, is very good as well.
Tata Altroz Engine Specifications & Performance
The Tata Altroz is powered by two engine options: a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder Revotron petrol engine that makes 85bhp and 113Nm of torque, and a 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder Revotorq diesel engine that produces 89bhp and 200Nm of torque. Both engines are paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The petrol engine is best suited to city conditions with decent power on tap, and the light clutch is a boon. Power delivery from the diesel engine, on the other hand, is nice and linear with power being easily accessible. It reaches cruising speeds without any fuss, but the engine does sound a bit coarse. Both engines are BSVI compliant. Ride quality is a little on the firm side, but it soaks in bumps with aplomb. At high speeds, the Altroz stays planted and the steering weighs up nicely with good feel. With its competitive on-road price, Tata Altroz is sure to lure buyers.
