Tata Tigor Highlights

Compact sedans are popular in the same way compact SUVs are, except that they’re targeted at a different set of buyers. The car that originally created this sub-4-metre segment many years ago was the Indigo eCS. Then the Zest came along but didn’t prove to be a successful attempt for the company. However, a sedan version of the Tiago was planned at a later stage and Tata called it the Tigor. This ‘Styleback’, as Tata’s marketing folks called it, was aimed at rivals from the Japanese and Koreans. The three-box design has been pretty popular ever since, and for 2020, Tata Motors has updated the Tigor on the design front, giving it a fresh persona, mildly refreshed cabin a BSVI-compliant petrol engine. There is also an increase in the Tata Tigor price by ₹ 10,000. 

Tata Tigor Exterior

When looked at from the front, the 2020 Tata Tigor new model looks identical to the Tiago with those sharp-looking, swept-back headlamps. Again, the grille boasts of a chrome ‘humanity line’ beneath it and the front bumper has been reshaped as well, just like the one on the Tiago hatchback. The high-set fog lamps look smart; so does the redesigned air dam. Look closely, and you will also notice the raised bonnet that’s been designed to meet the upcoming pedestrian safety norms. Along the sides, it sports 15-inch, laser-cut alloy wheels. What’s particularly attractive is the coupe-like roofline that’s visible. At the rear, it gets a stubby boot, a reshaped rear bumper and some updated tail lamp inserts. 

Tata Tigor Variants

The Tata Tigor variants for the petrol model are as follows: XE, XM, XZ, XMA, XZ+ and XZA+. Features include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment, follow-me-home headlamps, multi-drive modes, Harman infotainment system which offers aux-in, USB and Bluetooth connectivity for telephone functions and audio streaming, height-adjustable driver’s seat, multi-information display, cooled glovebox, rear park assist with display, Juke Car app and steering-mounted audio and phone controls. On the safety front, it gets ABS with EBD, corner stability control, rear parking sensors and dual front airbags.

Step into the cabin, and you’re greeted by a well-built cabin. The sporty steering from the 2020 Tiago is found on the Tigor as well, and the dashboard has a nice, textured feel to it. Even the upholstery and seat fabric are different from what you’ve seen on the older Tigor. At the front, the seats are huge and supportive. Visibility out-front is really good. There is lots of headroom, thanks to the low-set rear bench. The headrests are fixed for the rear occupants, and up to three can be seated abreast. Also, the central rear armrest can be folded down. We noticed that the four-speaker, four-tweeter set-up sounds rather good. Boot space, at 419 litres, is not bad as well. 

Tata Tigor Engine Specifications & Performance

Under the bonnet of the Tigor is a BSVI-compliant 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that makes 84bhp of power and 113Nm of torque, paired to either a five-speed manual transmission or an AMT gearbox. It features two driving modes: Eco and City. Power delivery from the motor is nice and smooth. Throttle response is decent, while the light clutch makes it a boon to drive in the city. However, when revved hard, the engine does sound a bit coarse. The steering of the Tigor is well-weighted and gets heavy at higher speeds. Around corners, the Tigor feels planted, though there is a bit of body roll. And the tyres offer good grip. Over bad roads, the suspension soaks in the bumps without any hesitation. For the on-road price, Tata Tigor is a well-rounded package. 

Tata Tigor Mileage 

The Tata Tigor’s ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figures are rated at 21kmpl for the petrol model.
