Yamaha debuts self-balancing electric R3
Yamaha has debuted its latest innovation in the two-wheeler safety department. Dubbed the Advanced Motorcycle Stability Assist System (AMSAS), the new technology has been showcased on a dummy electric R3. Here’s what we know about it.
While the overall structure of the electric R3 looks similar to the conventional bike, it’s equipped with two motors at the front. Positioned at the front wheel and the steering head, the actuators send inputs to make the necessary direction changes to stabilize the bike and turn it left or right, front or backward.

The AMSAS is designed to balance the bike and hold it upright for speeds up to 5kmph. And to do so, it gets a six-axis inertial measurement unit. Moreover, this isn’t the first time that Yamaha has dipped its toes into such an advanced system. It showcased the Motobot in 2015 and the Motodroid back in 2017. However, neither came to fruition.
Now, even the AMSAS is in its early stages of development. And apart from Yamaha, even Honda has been working on safety systems like semi-autonomous riding and airbag systems.
